sunday music 23/24 SEASON LAUNCH
Local singer/songwriter Anna Schneider opens Sunday music for the season. With a knack for melody and storytelling, Triple J unearthed has likened her Julia Jacklin, Faye Webster and Alice Phoebe Lo.
As Anna’s first note floats out into the air, hair on the backs of necks rise and chatter simmers to stunned silence; Anna has you pulled in, and as she plays on, you’ll want to be nowhere else. The earnest elegance of Anna’s songwriting, which slips between folk and indie and alt-rock touchstones, appears tantalisingly effortless, true, and endearingly demanding of your attention. The maturity of Anna’s music could at first appear surprising for such a young artist, but following two sold-out single launches (‘Whole’ and ‘Gaslight’), a WAM Song of the Year Nomination, most played track on RTR FM 2022, airtime on triple J, and gracing the stage with contemporaries such as Tia Gostelow, Noah Dillon, Jack Davies, as well as support set nods from Mama Kin and Chris Cheney (The Living End) Anna’s hard work and passion has rightfully earned her status as one of the most exciting emerging artists in Western Australia.
Indie-rock outfit smol fish are made up of four best friends who are known for their energetic and engaging live performances. With earnest lyricism and playful instrumentation, the band explores the lovely and lonesome aspects of being a 20-something navigating the world today. Though self-described as “not big,” smol fish have already achieved some notable accomplishments in their music career. They have been selected as a Triple J Unearthed feature artist, their song “Sad Girl Summer” was the most played track on RTRFM in 2021 and, in 2022, smol fish had the incredible opportunity to support Noah Dillon on a national tour, playing at 12 cities across Australia. Known for their energetic and engaging live performances, smol fish have gained a loyal following in their local music scene with their distinct style and undeniable chemistry on stage. The four-piece have just released their highly anticipated sophomore EP “crocodile tears.”
