Stuart Bailey is a Melbourne based artists and curator. He works in a variety of media with an emphasis on site-specific installation. Crafting self-esteem explores issues around the past uses of the building now occupied by the Fremantle Arts Centre. Channelling an art therapy class for troubled teens, Bailey has created a group of difficult sculptures. His sculptures are installed alongside a wall drawing and works by Basil Hadley (1940-2006) from the City of Fremantle Collection. Bailey is drawn to Hadley’s enjoyment of the tragicomic and looks to him as a possible mentor in his commentary on the impact of institutions on the individual.
