Exploring Abstract Acrylic Painting with Richard Gunning with Richard Gunning

This painting course explores the diverse possibilities of a major aspect of contemporary art (with a tradition that stretches back at least 100 years) - Abstraction!

Suitable for all skill levels this course is ideal for anyone who feels like stepping out of the confines of representational painting and gaining a better understanding of abstraction. Be expertly expertly lead you through a series of projects working alongside your tutor Richard Gunning, and create a set of paintings that cover the main approaches to abstraction.

You will learn about the history of Abstract Art and gain a deep understanding of how to harness colour, shape, and form to convey emotion and sensation in painting. The eight-week course will end with a mini-exhibition in the beautiful light filled FAC Painting Studio!

What to bring:-

  • Acrylic paints (Chromacryl/A2/Atelier/Matisse are recommended). You will learn how to mix all colours you need with these six colours and white, therefore you are encouraged to purchase good quality paints.
    • Titanium White
    • Warm Red - cadmium red or napthol scarlet
    • Cool Red - alizarin crimson or quinacridone red
    • Warm Blue - ultramarine
    • Cool Blue - phthalo blue
    • Warm Yellow - cadmium yellow medium or deep, or arylamine yellow
    • Cool Yellow - cadmium yellow light, or lemon yellow
    • Optional Colours: magenta, viridian or phthalo green, yellow ochre and mars black
  • Selection of acrylic, round and flat (filbert) brushes. Sizes 2, 4, 6 & 8
  • Flat palette
  • Jars with lids (at least two)
  • Rags
  • Notebook & pen
  • Apron
  • Canvas/boards and preparing surfaces will be discussed in first class
  • Further materials may be required throughout the course
