This exhibition explored the relationship between globalisation and local identity with imaginative and stimulating works in sculpture, photography, painting, installation and multi-media. The culmination of a two-year cycle of residencies, this ground-breaking project involved 22 Australian and international artists spending time in 16 regional Western Australian communities to consider their social and physical environments. The results were surprising and provocative.

Spaced: Art Out of Place is a new international biennial event, an initiative of IASKA and presented with Fremantle Arts Centre as part of the 2012 Perth Festival.

The idea is to make art more relevant and responsive to everyday life. We wanted to take contemporary artists out of their studios and encourage them to develop works by engaging with ordinary people, issues and situations.
