Stone & Floating Steel is the culmination of a month-long residency at FAC by Alice Springs-based painter Neridah Stockley. During her stay here in 2013 Stockley enjoyed painting outdoors throughout Fremantle, capturing scenes that will be familiar to many locals.
The artist has an interest in port cities and how their evocative imagery becomes stitched into the public’s psyche. Convict and colonial markers, architecture, seascapes and urban landscapes were all key points of inquiry while Carnac Island, off Rottnest acted as a visual anchor for Stockley’s work during her residency.
Developed from her outdoor studies, Stockley has created a series of vibrant, colour-saturated paintings that contain a tension between representation and abstraction, bringing the studio to the landscape and the landscape into the studio.
Neridah Stockley is represented by Damien Minton Gallery and Raft Artspace.
