ABOUT THE EVENT
Led by IOTA24: Codes in Parallel curators Jude van de Merwe and Carola Akindele-Obe, join us for an insightful discussion about the intent and process behind the works of these leading craft artists exhibiting at FAC:
Jacky Cheng – Malaysia Australia
Jacky Cheng was born in Malaysia of Chinese heritage. She received her Bachelor of Architecture (Honours 1) from University of New South Wales, Sydney. She is an artist, a facilitator and an art educator based in Broome, Western Australia.
Jacky Cheng’s practice is fundamentally about identity and awareness through cultural activities and memories of home, Country and relationships.
Her significant concerns are about correlating and weaving narratives from her native experiences whilst mapping the esoteric and social relationships of her origins and her new found home, environment and social surroundings. Her awareness is amplified through her diasporic lens and identity as a person of colour in foreign borders as she continues to question her notion of ‘home’ and ‘belonging’ – ‘here and there’ and traversing the ‘in between’ territories.
Alfred Lowe – Australia
Alfred Lowe is an Arrernte person from Snake Well in the Central Desert, north of Alice Springs.
Alfred uses clay/ceramics to explore themes of Country using form and texture informed by his intimate knowledge of the Central Desert landscape. He hand builds forms, creates organic vessels, and applies underglazes and a range of mark-making to the surface.
Central Australia is a politically and racially charged region, and this has fuelled Alfred’s keen interest in politics and racial justice. In particular, he is interested in how culture and identity are navigated and manifested in modern times. Alfred knows these themes are underlying in his work; as an early career artist he is still examining how these influences and experiences are reflected in his artistic practice.
Vipoo Srivilasa – Thailand Australia
A Thai-born Australian artist, recognised as a leader in the field of ceramics.
Over the past two decades, Vipoo has made works that engage with complex questions of queerness, migration and spiritual meaning, using an aesthetic and medium that is accessible, positive and beautiful.
His works often explore the dark parts of experience including isolation, loneliness, nostalgia, as well as joy, beauty, and hope in the midst of these struggles.
Vipoo has exhibited extensively around the world, including Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Saatchi Gallery, London; Ayala Museum, Philippines; Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taiwan; Nanjing Arts Institute, China and the National Gallery of Thailand.
Bappaditya Biswas – India
With Rumi Biswas, Bappaditya set up ‘bai lou’ in 2002 to explore loom finished textiles. Bai lou has been awarded the UNESCO Seal of Excellence for innovation for a double cloth weaving technique in which metallic sequins are inserted into small pockets during weaving.
Weftscapes was first developed and shown at the Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa in late 2019/20. In contrast to his dramatic, abstract and oversized work with Jamdani, during COVID lockdowns he developed new techniques for painting with natural dyes and mordants, re-claiming traditional chintzback to India. In 2022 he was one of 75 prominent artists, designers and crafts workers invited to exhibit in the Sur Santi exhibition at the National Art Gallery of India.
IOTA24: Codes in Parallel showcases the work of international craft artists and groups from six Indian Ocean countries – India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, South Africa, and includes First nations Australians and Australians of diverse heritages.
