Fremantle has long been known as a hub for artists and the sharing of craft skills. Fired Up is a participatory community project that reflects on what can happen when one master shares their skills among many students.
Inspired by the legacy of nationally-renowned local ceramicist Joan Campbell, Fired Up will begin with a weekend of free ceramic hand-building workshops on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May. Drop in to one or both sessions to make your own pinch pot and learn about ancient and contemporary pottery traditions, local ceramicists and clay sculpting techniques.
Once the sculptures have dried participants can attend a special free firing session along the shore of Bathers Beach in July. Scupltures will then be nestled into the embers of open fires and baked using the ancient Japanese firing technique of Raku.
