Disclosure is a quarterly evening of discourse and ideas; presenters share knowledge and experience from their own unique vantage points, challenging us to see the world through a lens that is not our own.
For this edition of Disclosure, hear from art historian, curator, and writer Jessyca Hutchens talk about her work with print in collections.
Jessyca’s research explores the histories of Australian Indigenous printmaking and in 2022 she curated an exhibition Inhabiting the Trace, which featured Indigenous print artists from the Berndt Museum collections. Jessyca recently began a Curatorial Fellowship with the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection at the University of Virginia, which will culminate in an extensive exhibition of prints by First Nations artists from across Australia, from a collection donated by master printer Basil Hall. Drawing upon these projects, Jessyca will discuss some of the formative and innovative engagements that First Nations artists have had with printmaking, and the way their work has pushed the medium.
Dr Jessyca Hutchens is a Palyku woman living and working on Noongar boodja, and a Lecturer at the School of Indigenous Studies at the University of Western Australia. Jessyca is an art historian, curator, and writer who has previously held positions as the Curator at the Berndt Museum, the Curatorial Assistant to the Artistic Director for the 22nd Biennale of Sydney, and as a Lecturer in Global Art History at the University of Birmingham. She is currently working on a project on the histories of Australian Indigenous printmaking and was recently a co-curator of the exhibition Black Sky, for the 2023 Perth Festival. Jessyca writes regularly on contemporary art, is a co-founder and editor of an online journal of artistic research, oarplatform.com and a member of the editorial committee of Un Magazine.
