About Desperate Measures EXHIBITION
This exhibition presents artworks from the City of Fremantle Art and Civic Collections as well as photographs, posters and T-shirts borrowed from the local community, to explore the artists, performers and activists that lit up Freo in the period 1977-1985.
The exhibition charts the cultural shift that occurred in Fremantle after 1975, when the city was an affordable place to live, attracting a unique mix of students, artists, performers and activists; creating a vibrant community that engaged with wider political issues. The legacy of this artistic community continues to be felt across WA and Australia.
Freo was a place where young people with dynamic energy dreamed up ideas and then executed them. We were unconstrained and very open to anyone who came along and wanted to join in. Micko O’Byrne 2024
