Join City of Fremantle Curator and Collections Lead Abigail Moncrieff, Exhibitions Manager Pete Volich and City of Fremantle Collections Curator Andre Lipscombe for a tour of this season’s three inspiring exhibitions:

Cathy Coomer, artist and Aboriginal activist, will be a guest speaker at the tour to discuss her works in Aboveground Belowground. Cathy will also bring a sample of her protest banners for guests to experience firsthand in our exhibition space, alongside an insightful deep dive into her formative years, experiences, and truth-telling.

Developed in partnership with the Aboriginal Art Centre Hub of Western Australia (AACHWA),this years exhibition celebrates the diversity, talent and passion of contemporary Aboriginal Art practice in Western Australia.

Known for championing new and emerging First Nations artists, in 2024 there are 42 artists featured in Revealed for the first time – the highest number of emerging artists that have featured in the exhibition since its inception. Learn some of the stories behind the works in the exhibition and gain new knowledge about the different approaches used by the artists to share their stories across country and culture.

DARRYL DEMPSTER

Join Fremantle Arts Centre Exhibitions Manager and exhibition curator Pete Volich for a tour of DooDoo.

Doodoo presents a series of new works by emerging artist Darryl Dempster. A proud Noongar man, Darryl was born and raised in Kepa Kurl (Esperence), Western Australia and moved to Boorloo (Perth) in his early adulthood. Embarking on his creative exploration five years ago, Darryl uncovered his innate talent and passion for artmaking, using vibrant colours and energetic gestures to communicate his rich inner world.

ABOVEGROUND BELOWGROUND

Aboveground belowground, presents contemporary and historical artworks drawn from the City of Fremantle Art and Civic Collections.

This selection provides access to various intersecting points of interpretation and knowledge about the Dreaming origins of the Swan River (Derbarl Yerrigan) and Rottnest Island (Wadjemup) at Fremantle (Walyalup) and its changing landscape, irrevocably accelerated by the expansion of the port.
