Join us to celebrate the launch of the publication A Gentle Misinterpretation: Australian Artists and Chinoiserie, which offers an in-depth interrogation of key themes and creative practices currently showcased in the exhibition of the same name at Fremantle Arts Centre.

Conceived and curated by Andrew NichollsA Gentle Misinterpretation: Australian Artists and Chinoiserie features new works by thirteen Australian artists which respond to the fascinating but complicated legacy of chinoiserie and the history of imperialism and decadence it grew from.

Featuring a curatorial essay by Andrew Nicholls, the catalogue documents the striking installation at Fremantle Arts Centre, shares the numerous international residencies that resulted in new works, and importantly offers readers with a rich historical framework by which to understand chinoiserie, the intensely problematic appropriation of Asian cultures.

After the official launch join exhibiting artists Theo Costantino and Pilar Mata Dupont in conversation with exhibition curator Andrew Nicholls, who will talk about their works and practices.

Program

  • 11am: Publication launch in the Inner Courtyard with light refreshments and pastries
  • 12pm: Artist talks with Theo Costantino, Pilar Mata Dupont & Andrew Nicholls
