Oil Painting for Beginners – Developing Techniques with Richard Gunning

Learn how to work with this exciting medium. Gain an understanding of colour theory and how form and tone are developed. With plenty of demonstrations and expert tutor guidance students will work on a painting over five weeks.

A basic painting kit is required for this course. Additional materials will be supplied by FAC. Students may add to their own painting kit once they become better acquainted with the materials required.

What to bring:-

  • Canvas board or stretched canvas (approx. A2 - A3, but no smaller than A3)
  • Oil paint colours 40ml (Daler Rowney Georgian recommended)
    • Titanium White
    • Cadmium Red (hue)
    • Phthalo Blue
    • Ivory Black
    • Yellow Ochre
  • Brushes various sizes. Recommend at least size 1 and above. Brushes - Westart Series 582 & 587 are good (or a selection of hog hair round and square)
  • Odorless Solvent (the cheapest brand is fine!) You may use pure turps for cleaning brushes only (do not buy mineral turps)
  • Linseed Oil 100ml (Art Spectrum recommended)
  • Jars with lids (at least two)
  • Mixing palette/board/disposable palette is recommended
  • Palette knife
  • Rags
  • Students can provide portrait photo if painting portrait
  • Students can choose to work from life with still life objects or from photos
