FAC After School Art Courses: Drawing, Watercolour, Collage and Mixed Media with Jenessa King
Fremantle Arts Centre is proud to present our first round of After School Art Courses for students currently enrolled between Years 3 to 6 in 2025.
Join the amazing Jenessa King in a 6-week course focusing on the development of visual awareness and creativity in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
Students will learn about art elements and principles and be taught a range of skills, processes and techniques. Each week they will explore different mediums such as drawing, watercolour, collage & mixed media and be introduced to artists both contemporary and historical which are associated with each.
Children will be encouraged and supported in opportunities for art making as a means of self-expression and communication and will get the chance to share and reflect on their creations during a mini exhibition held on the final day, which parents, guardians and caregivers are encouraged to attend!
Week 1: Drawing (Pencil)
Artists Explored: M.C. Escher and Ross Potter
Students develop understanding and knowledge of subject matter through slow, careful observation, exploring pencil shading and completing 8 ‘graduated tone’ exercises that help them to create a strong sense of space and form.
Students explore contours, shadows and form and learn how shapes can simplify complex forms by exploring the human figure as a series of shapes.
Week 2: Drawing (Pen)
Artists Explored: Paul Signac and Keith Haring
Using pen students explore different types of mark making (Hatching, stippling, scribbling etc) and learn how artists use different qualities of lines to create texture, pattern and movement in their work.
Students will learn own to make creative decisions about when to use a certain mark in a particular context and will create a composition using different kinds of mark-making techniques.
Week 3: Watercolour
Artists Explored: John Singer Sargent and Barbara Nicholls.
Students explore watercolour as a medium and will use basic colour theory and mixing, tone and water washes to create a composition using different kinds of watercolour textures and techniques.
Week 4: Collage
Artists Explored: Hannah Hoch, Henry Matisse and Eric Carle.
Students think deeply about composition by arranging pieces of cut paper/card to create an artwork.
Week 5: Mixed Media
Artists explored: Pablo Picasso and Akunyili Crosby
Students explore working with a combination of Mixed media such as pencil, pastels, pen, collage, and found objects, to create a unique and layered artwork drawing on the skills and processes learnt in previous lessons.
Week 6: Exhibit, Share and Reflect
Students exhibit their artwork and take time to appreciate what has been made, and explore how to talk about art, to reflect and focus their thoughts, and to listen to feedback from others.
