Drawing: The Basics

Drawing is a wonderful and rewarding endeavour and can be an art form in itself, or act as a beneficial adjunct to painting, and many other creative pursuits.
The simple act of drawing on a regular basis will, above all teach you to see, increasing your ability to observe the world around you. An essential skill for the visual artist.
Learn from the ground up, the fundamentals of drawing which include Form, Line, Tonal Values, Perspective Theory and the proper use of traditional mainstream materials such as Graphite Pencil, Charcoal, Conte, Ink and expressing in colour with the all favourite Colour Pencils.

What to bring:-

  • Heavyweight A3 size paper (pad or single sheets)
  • Staedtler Tradition pencils HB, 2B, 4B, 6B
  • Willow charcoal
  • Compressed charcoal medium grade
  • Charcoal pencil, medium grade
  • Staedtler Mars Plastic eraser
  • Fab-Castell kneadable eraser
  • A3 size folio (not essential0
  • Small retractable knife
  • Fine grade sandpaper
  • Bulldog clips for fastening paper onto drawing board
  • Masking tape
  • Coloured pencils will be discussed during the term
  • Further materials may be required throughout the course

COVID-19 Response:

FAC has implemented a number of cleaning and safety measures to ensure our students’ wellbeing. Social distancing will be observed in the studios and course content has been adapted to suit new safety guidelines. Hand sanitiser will be provided and studios will be thoroughly cleaned before and after each class.
